#16 Playing for peace

These 2 words are important in English:
          would: اگر می خواهید
          could:  اگر می توانستید

Massoud and Mahmud Hassani lived near Kabul when they were little boys.  They played (بازی کردن) in the desert (صحرا). They made toys (اسباب بازی) that the wind would (اگر می خواهید) blow (دمیدن).

Then armies (ارتش) from other countries came to train (تعلیم دادن) their soldiers in the desert. The armies put landmines (مین های زمینی) in the ground (زمین). Today there are thousands (1000s) and thousands of landmines in the ground in Afghanistan.
The boys father died (die: مردن). The boys’ mother smuggled (قاچاق کردن) her sons out of Afghanistan. The boys traveled (سفر کردن) for 4 years. Finally, they found (find:  یافتن) a home in the Netherlands (هلند). The boys went to school. The boys studied very well. They did well in school.

When the boys finished (finish:  تمام کردن)  university they wanted to help their country. They had an idea (اندیشه). The idea came from a wind toy the brothers made when they were little.  You can see their toy in this photo.  They thought (think: اندیشیدن) the toy could (اگر می توانستید) help destroy landmines!

They made a “huge (کلان) toy” that looks like a dandelion (قاصدک). It is called a “mine-kafon”.  Kafon means “explosion” in Dari. The wind blows the mine-kafon. When the mine-kafon hits (زدن) a landmine, the landmine explodes (منفجر کردن).

The brothers are now working to make a new device (دستگاه). It is a drone. You can see the drone in this photo.  The drone can do 3 things: it can find (یافتن) landmines. It can make a map (نقشه) and show where the landmines are. It can destroy (نابود کردن) the landmines.  The brothers hope to go back to Afghanistan soon and take the drone with them.

The brothers say, “Our lives are dedicated (اختصاص دادن) to destroying (از بین بردن) landmines. It will be great to go back to our country with this gift.”  If you could do something for your country, what would you do?
