Veronika Scott lives in Detroit. It is a poor (فقیر) city. It is a city that has many problems (مسئله). More than 20,000 [twenty thousand] people in Detroit do not have a home. They live on the streets. They are homeless.When Veronika was young (جوان), her life was not easy. Her mother and father were very poor. They had problems with alcohol (الکل). Her childhood (کودکی) was not happy. But she worked hard (کار سخت) in school because she wanted (خواستن) a better (بهتر) life. She earned (کسب کردن) a scholarship (معاش گرفتن) to go to university.
When Veronika went to university she had a design (طرح) class. The teacher gave the students a test: design (طرح کردن) something that will make people's lives better (بهتر)!
Veronika designed a very warm coat for homeless (بی خانمان) people. But it is more than a coat! It is also a sleeping bag (کیسه خواب) to help someone sleeping on the street stay warm at night. And it is a backpack (کوله پشتی) so a homeless person can easily (به آسانی) carry things they need.
For many months (ماه) Veronika worked to design the coat. She had to make lots of changes (تغییر). Finally (سرانجام), she gave (دادن) one of her coats to a homeless person. He was very happy! She made more coats and gave each one to a homeless person. But one day one woman was not happy! She shouted (فریاد زدن) at Veronika! She said, "Don't give us coats! Give us work!"
Veronika knew (دانستن) the woman was right. Veronika started her own non-profit (غیر انتفاعی) company. People said to her, "You will fail (شکست خوردن)!" They said, "You cannot trust (اعتماد داشتن) homeless people. They do not work hard (good/well)." But Veronika did not listen (گوش دادن) to them!
Now fifteen (15) women work for Veronika and make coats. After work, Veronika gives them classes in reading, writing and math. There are even exercise (ورزش) classes so the women's health (سلامتی) will be better.

Now the women have work they are proud of. They do not live on the streets now. The jobs are helping the women and their children! When mothers succeed (موفق شدن), their children have a better chance (فرصت) of succeeding.
Veronika is only 26 years old. She knows what it is like to be poor. She knows what it is like to have big problems. How did she succeed? With money? No. With a good idea (نظریه)? Yes! With hard work? Yes! With wanting to help other people? Yes! Since (از آنجا که) 2012, the women who work for Veronika have made 15,000 free coats for the homeless.
