#4 The Paper Boy

This is a true (درست) story. Its a story you can (قادر بودن) read and do (انجام دادن)!
This story is about a boy in India. But the story could be about a girl in Afghanistan, or a student in Turkey!
The boy’s name is Abdul.  He is a good boy. He is an ordinary ( عادی ) boy.  There are many smart boys in Abdul’s school! He is not the smartest ( باهوش ترین ) boy in school. But Abdul is very kind ( مهربان ).
One day in school Abdul read a story. The story was about “plastic” (پلاستیک ) bags.  There are too many plastic bags ( کیسه ) in the world.  Plastic bags really hurt ( صدمه ) our environment ( محیط ).  Many plastic bags are thrown (throw: انداختن ) into the ocean ( اقیانوس ). Every year over 1 million (1
میلیون) fish in the ocean die ( مردن ) from eating plastic bags.
     Abdul said (say:
گفتن ) to his mother, “This problem is very bad.  It makes me sad. I want to do something to help.”
His mother said, “The problem is too big. There is nothing you can do. You are just a boy.”
But Abdul told his mother he wanted to try. He found (find: یافتن ) some newspapers ( روزنامه ) in his house.  With the newspapers, he made 10 paper bags.  He worked very hard. He made them very well. The next day he went to a store ( فروشگاه ) where people buy ( خریدن ) food. He showed ( نشان دادن ) his bags to the man who owns the store. Abdul said, Please, help me. Plastic is hurting ( صدمه ) our world.  I made these bags. Please give them to the women who come to buy food. Ask them to use these bags and not plastic.
Abdul did not sell ( فروختن ) his bags to the man. Abdul gave (give: دادن ) his bags to the man. The man gave the bags to women who come to shop.
Then Abdul made more bags. But his father said to his mother, “He will stop soon and go play ( بازی کردن ) with his friends!”  His father did not believe ( باور کردن ) that Abdul was serious (جدی).

But Abdul made 5 to 10 bags every day. In 2 years, Abdul made 5000 bags! Now Abdul is not alone. He makes paper bags, and teachers, students and shop owners are making paper bags.
People all over India use paper bags now. They do not use plastic. Thanks to Abdul, each year in India there is one day called NO PLASTIC DAY!” On this day people do not use plastic. They learn new ways to help our environment.  Abdul was given the highest award ( جایزه ) you can get in India.
One 8-year-old boy did something to help his country and the world.

What can we learn (یاد گرفتن) from this story?

1) Abdul worked hard (a lot: خیلی) to do something good.
2) People did not think he could do what he wanted to do, but he still tried (try: سعی کردن ).
